90’s Fun Facts: 3 Times Phoebe Predicted 9/11 on Friends
With her guitar and free spirit, Phoebe Buffay quickly became the world’s favorite oddball on the funniest show that definitely isn’t overrated at all. Sure, die-hard comedy fans remember everything about Friends, but only real 90’s kids remember Phoebe predicting the September 11th attacks.
1. The time she sang ‘Smelly Cat’ and casually dropped that Bin Laden had some big plan for late summer of 2001: Phoebe’s trademark song is her claim to such well-deserved and accurate fame, but who can forget the Labor Day Special back in 1997 when Phoebe sang “Smelly cat, smelly cat/ Right around this day in about, say, 4 years Bin Laden has a surprise for you/ Smelly cat, smelly cat/ Definitely around this time when people still wear shorts but also might wear a sweater.” So tragic and silly!
2. The time she caught Chandler and Monica having sex and was, like, fine but I know about an attack the day before Jason Statham’s birthday: Chandler and Monica’s dirty little secret was quite the roller coaster ride of excitement but through the peaks and troughs of comedy brilliance nothing can top the pure divinity of Phoebe catching them right before they do sex. Boy, did she have a reaction. Phoebe immediately started screaming “My eyes! My eyes!” but under her breathe she clearly says “You didn’t tell me about this? Fine, I’m not going to say anything to anybody about an al-Qaeda attack that is totally going to overshadow Jason Statham’s birthday in 2001. Mark my fucking words.” Such a kook! Got to love the Phoebster.
3. The time she told Rachel to get off the plane for Ross on the finale: Everyone remembers their heart strings being yanked when Rachel got off the plane and showed up at Ross’ apartment, but let’s not forget that Phoebe convinced her to get off by saying something was wrong with the plane’s “left phalange.” A classic quirky quip from Phoebs, but for those in the know, “left phalange” was actually CIA code during the Clinton Administration for “al-Qaeda will crash planes into the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.” I know what you’re thinking: this episode aired in 2004? You bet it did, but it was one of the earliest episodes shot in the entire series way back in 1994! NBC heads loved Friends so much that they threatened to castrate themselves if they couldn’t see the finale 10 years early. So, chalk another spot-on prediction of 9/11 on the board for Ms. Buffay.
